Rhyl Town hall welcomes back the films of Arthur Cheetham
On Friday 13th May at 7.30pm, Rhyl town hall will take a step back in time by hosting a film night celebrating the work of Arthur Cheetham, best known as Rhyl's pioneer film-maker.
Cheetham focused many of his films on various events and street scenes in Rhyl and would show them at the Town Hall or Grand Pavilion. Cheetham also toured North and Mid Wales in 1898, stopping to film at Conwy, Llangollen, Holyhead, and Aberystwyth amongst many other places. He later returned to these towns where he took his 'Silvograph show', working under the name of 'Silvograph Animated Pictures'. Although he opened a permanent cinema at the old Operetta House in Market Street, his first film was screened at Rhyl Town Hall in 1898, showing children playing on Rhyl beach, making it an appropriate venue for such an event.
Seven films will be shown at Rhyl Town Hall on May 13th (7.30pm), which include: Lifeboat day in Rhyl, Royal visit to Conwy, Black face Pierrots, Procession in Rhyl and many more. Rhyl historian, Philip Lloyd will be introducing the films with a live music accompaniment from Paul Shallcross.
There is no admission charge, but early arrival is advised.
This event is organised and supported by the Joint Area Museum Education Service and The National Screen & Sound Archive of Wales. Thanks also to Rhyl Town hall for hosting the event
